I have really been wanting Wyatt to learn to swim better. Since we are around so much water in the summer it is great if he is more comfortable in the water. It is such a needed skill for every kid. And who doesn't love swimming anyways. In March we decided to take swimming lessons in Kingsport with Wyatt's friend Lucy. It was quite a commitment since we had to drive an hour twice a week, but they loved it and it really taught them a lot and made them more comfortable with swimming. We were also able to carpool most days which made it nice and we did some other outings in kingsport along the way.
Wyatt was a little tentative at first, but he really improved. He really didn't like floating (with assistance) on his back, but by the end he was able to do it for 5-10 seconds. He also didn't like putting his face in the water, but was able to do it for a split second after lessons. Then we also practiced all summer to where he would actually go under for 3 seconds and get an object. The lessons really helped him to feel confident and remember to kick and use arms while swimming. We also got to practice quite a bit over the summer. Wyatt is not a super daredevil so he still won't jump in and go under water or try to swim where he can't touch, but that is ok. I never wanted to push him too hard and I liked the progress that he made. He is able to have a lot of fun when he swims, he can just wear his life jacket and swim by himself in the deep end. He will swim under water a little in the shallow end too and will jump in where he knows he can touch. Overall, it was a great experience and we hope to do it again when we are bored in the winter.
